The Atlantic Wall was built by the Germans in World War 2 along the Atlantic coast, as protection against invaders from the West. It took them two years to build it. It covered the coastline from France up to Scandinavia. It didn't help: at D-day most of the defences were stormed within hours and Europe was liberated by the allied forces in 1945. Today, ruins of the wall exist in all of the nations where it was built. Other walls faced a similar fate, like the wall of Hadrian and the Berlin wall.

This painting is part of a Triptych.
