Atlantic Wall 1

2021

The Atlantic Wall was built by the Germans in World War 2 along the Atlantic coast, as protection against invaders from the West. It took them two years to build it. It covered the coastline from France up to Scandinavia. It didn't help: at D-day most of the defences were stormed within hours and Europe was liberated by the allied forces in 1945. Today, ruins of the wall exist in all of the nations where it was built. Other walls faced a similar fate, like the wall of Hadrian and the Berlin wall.  This painting is part of a Triptych.

Tide

2015

Tide coming in in the bay of the Somme. This is a large estuary in the North of France that covers a total area of 72 km2. The bay drains six rivers into the English Channel, principally the  River Somme. When the tide is out, one can cross the wide, flat areas of marsh and sand to the other side. However, when the tide rises, the bay fills rapidly and a boat is needed for the crossing.
